“Like Rodney Dangerfield, Married… with Children never got any respect. The ‘vulgar’ American (anti-)domestic sitcom ran 11 seasons from 1987 to 1997, and is the longest-running live-action sitcom ever aired on the Fox network. Despite its popularity, the show never won an Emmy. North Carolina Republican senator Jesse Helms called the show ‘trash.’ It was the target of a national boycott due to its sexual content. The show’s working title was Not the Cosbys (unsettling in light of The Cosby Show‘s creator/star Bill Cosby’s later multiple sexual assault cases), signaling a departure from the usual happy sitcom family. Predating Seinfeld‘s ‘no hugging, no learning’ writers’ room credo, Married… with Children is almost nihilistic in its satirization of the typical domestic sitcom.”
